Pinewood Derby

Friday, April 10th was the cub scout pinewood derby. Shane came home late Wednesday night, just in time to help Jared make his super-cool racer. They spent the next two days working on it.

John Raines House

Saturday we went with Jared's cub scout group to the "History Day" at the John Raines House in Rancho Cucamonga. The kids had a good time learning the "old fashioned" way of life. They dipped candles, beat rugs, washed laundry and made adobe bricks.

Astronomy Night

Thursday, for cub scouts we looked through telescopes at the Moon and Saturn. It was really neat looking at Saturn, you could see the planet and the ring!

Here's my picture of the moon (it looked alot bigger in the telescope)

Trees & Fish

We had a busy day on Saturday. We started off early meeting with the Wolf cub scouts at the San Gabriel Education Center (up Azusa canyon). We participated in the San Gabriel Valley Watershed Restoration project. Our job was planting tree starts. The boys did a great job and worked hard to do their best planting (only 1 out of every 10 will grow into a mature tree).

Shane and Jared planting our little trees.
After planting our little tree in milk cartons we wheel barreled them over to the nursery and lined them up with the others.

After helping with the restoration project we drove up the canyon about a mile to the West Fork of the San Gabriel River to do some fishing. The boys were all very excited! We hiked up the river almost 1 mile and found a nice shady spot. No one had any luck there, only a few nibbles.
The rest of our group had to leave at noon, but of course Shane could not be skunked. We hiked a few hundred yards up river, just the 3 of us. Shane caught 5 fish.
Here is Jared with the first catch. It was pretty small, but the perfect size for the little area he made in the river to hold the fish.

This is my bran-new fishing pole (PINK). Shane says its not pink, its salmon (that's what he says to make him feel better when he uses it).
Here is Shane's prize catch of the day, caught with my "salmon" (pink) pole!

"Gearing" up for the Pinewood Derby

Last Weekend was Jared's Pinewood Derby. Shane and Jared had a fun time building his car. I oversaw the paint and sticker job. Jared raced three times and took second place each time, but he got an award for the best paint job!

Graber Olive House

Shane is Jared's Cubscout den leader and last weekend we took the cubs to the Graber Olive House in Ontario. We took a 30 minute tour of the processing area (a hundred year old barn where they cure and can olives). All the adults found it quite interesting and I think the kids had fun too. They especially liked the free sample of olives at the end of the tour.
